The Spartans have been immortalised in history through the Battle of Thermopelye in 480 BC..In this epic battle 300 Spartan soldiers along with the King of Sparta Leonidas laid down their lives in order to delay the invasion of the Persians who controlled two thirds of the then known world.Although all 300 were slain along with thousands of other Greek soldiers the Battle set the scene for the ultimate evacuation of Persians from the Greek mainland a year later.The losses on the Persian side ran into tens of thousands and you could not touch the ground without stepping on a Persian body after two days of bloodshed.The rise of the Greek culture and the decline of the Persian stranglehold was the basis of the birth of western civilisation as we know it today.Sparta and its way of life was always doomed to die.
Although abhorrent to todays society Sparta was a city State whose individuals were trained from early childhood to be one and the same with the state.These facist tendencies were later to be admired by Adolf Hitler who particularly aspired to the theory of eugenics which was also practised by the Spartans.For the Spartans with their limited numbers it was vital that the individuals that made up the state were as physically strong as possible.The elders of the State would examine new born children to ascertain their fitness.Any child with noticeable weakness or disability were despatched immediately from the top of a rocky promontory to their death below.The Spartans enslaved fellow Greeks (called helots) to do farm work and craft work as all male children were trained in the art of warfare.Taken from their families at 7 years of age the male children were then trained by older youths , their mentors and they lived by thier wits in the wilderness whilst being trained in battle and dance and arts in order to preserve the City State from invasion.Once trained and connverant with military techniques they then lived in barracks even when they were married.Long spells away from their wives were compensated by elders of the state who would often take yoounger women to keep steady the numbers in the population.
According to historians the City State of Sparta never numbered more than about 10000 male citizens so it is surprising to learn that this state survived for almost 500 years before being swamped by the Macedonian empire of Alexander the Great. The bravery and frugality of these brave warriors lives on today in the term itself Spartan plus the memorial mound in Thermopelye that commemorates the bravery of these men who fought to the death which led to the unification as one nation of the ancient greek City states.The Spartans believed they were descended from the hero Hercules and the King was was named thus..Leonidas means in Greek "of Lions"..Hercules was famous in ancient Greek mythology for slaying lions with his great strength.
Sparta was also unique in the ancient world for giving recognition to women.Indeed it was said that Spartan women could fight "as men."For Spartan men it was agreat honour to die in Battle and for Spartan women it was a great honour to die in childbirth.
The recent film "300" from the graphic novel by Frank Miller (Sin City)portrays the historic Battle of Thermopelye with all the gore and horror that would have abounded in battle at that time.Whilst keeping as near as possible to the limited historical accuracy available (mainly the Greek Historian Herodatus) Frank Miller does use poetic license in his brilliant portrayal.There were no animals used in Battle for example and the Spartans DID wear plated body armour (much stronger than the Persians).Frank left the Spartans without armour to enhance the individual identity of the Spartans from the other Greeks in Battle and of of course the Persians.
